How to install ADMT 3.2 in Windows Server 2008 R2

Updated Version –

Download the re-released version from the below link. which doesn’t run OS checks

Download Active Directory Migration Tool version 3.2

OS – 2008R2

Forest Level/Domain Level – 2008R2

image

Type the Default Instance if you have a SQL Server ,

I have the SQL server on DC itself , you have to type .\SQLEXPRESS

If you are not aware of SQLEXPRESS ,  See below link on how to install sql express 2012

How to Install Microsoft® SQL Server® 2008 R2 SP1 on Windows server 2008 R2

image

Choose No

image

Click Finish

image

Start  – Administrative Tools –> Active Directory Migration Tool

image

Now ADMT is Ready to Migrate Users

The Functional Level of the forest is incompatible with this operating system

I want to introduce a Windows 2008 r2 domain controller in a Windows 2012/Windows 2012R2 Domain .

let see how to we can lower Active Directory domain/forest Functional Level from 2012/2012R2 to 2008 R2

image

To See Existing Forest/Domain functional level

Open Power shell in Windows Server 2012 Domain Controller

Import-Module ActiveDirectory

Get-Adforest

image

Get-ADDomain

image

========

Authentication Policies is the only important feature enabled on 2012 R2.

To Reduce the forest/domain functional level to 2008R2

Set-ADForestMode –Identity “testcareexchange.biz” –ForestMode Windows2008R2Forest

Set-ADDomainMode –Identity “testcareexchange.biz” –DomainMode Windows2008R2Domain

image

Now my 2008R2 domain controller can be introduced .

Note – Once Recycle Bin is enabled on 2012/2012R2 Level it won’t allow you to roll back.

QuickTip- Move-Adobject – Windows 2012 R2

image_thumb1

If we want to move AD objects (E.g users) across domains or Same Domain . (Note: This Command doesn’t work across forsest)

Let me Move some 3 Users from One OU to Different OU.

In this Below example – am listing Objects like user where name starts with GG ,Specifying the Target path .

(Note : You can get the Target path from the distinguishedname attribute of the OU)

PS — On a Domain Controller run Windows Server 2012 R2

Import-Module ActiveDirectory

Get-ADObject  -Filter {(Objectclass -like “user”) -and (name -like “GG*”)}  | Move-ADObject -TargetPath “OU=IT,DC=testcareexchange,DC=biz” -Verbose
